With joy and excitement we welcomed our first baby boy into the family. The delivery was a little draining on mom as she had to push for a long time after becoming complete since Gabriel was initially OP (face up instead of face down) and a good bit bigger than expected. 30 Week Sonogram

Yet again, "Baby D" does not seem to be too fond of having it's picture taken. (Wait till it learns that it has a picture-taking professional uncle Jose!) This time the baby was still in the breach position (butt down) AND FACING BACKWARDS! Very difficult to get a good picture, so I guess we'll be making another trip back to the sonogram place soon.

Here are the pictures we were able to get.

Baby Room Improvements

We've been working hard to get ready for "Baby D's" arrival in June. We started with a completely tan room, put up beadboard, chair rail, crown molding, installed new carpet, slapped on several coats of new paint, and put together some of the new furniture. So we basically have a new room from top to bottom!

(Thanks to Papa "Yoohoo" and Uncle Jose for helping out along the way. Crown molding is a little more complicated to install than you would think)

We'll add more photo's later when, the room is decorated.

27 Week Sonogram

"Baby D" didn't cooperate too well on our 27 week sonogram. He/she was in a breach position with it's feet and hands in front of it's face. That made it a little hard to get good sonogram pictures, but the nice thing is that the sonogram company is going to let us come back as many times as it takes to get a good picture of the baby. So join with us to find out if and when Baby D decides to cooperate. Until then, here are the pictures we have so far.

Alaska 2009 - Part 3 - Seward & Halibut Fishing

After Settling in at Lorri's house in Moose Pass, we spent several days sightseeing. Below are pictures of our hike to Exit Glacier.

It's amazing to see how far the glacier has receeded, even just the change since the previous year. I'd hate to be a park ranger and have to rebuild trails and keepout ropes each year.
So one of the other tourists, looks at that glacier and asks if they can eat the ice. When the guide told her no, she asked "Why? Is the water not pure." I guess some people just aren't that smart. I mean, just look there's all kind of dirt and wind blown items in the Glacier. It's still reall beautiful, though.

We also took a drive to the port town of Seward, Alaska. Below are some pictures of the town, and later on pictures of our fishing trip for Hallibut.

A fishing trip just came ashore with their catch of Silver Samon.

This Bald Eagle swooped down right in front of us, grabbed a samon carcass and flew up to the top of the telephone pole.

On our way back to Moose Pass, we stopped by some of the local streams that were full of samon making their run to their breeding grounds.

The next day, we headed back to Seward for our fishing charter.

Here's our boat...

Jaclynn really liked Halibut fishing (said it was her favorite part of the trip...I couldn't believe it!). Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that you bait the hook, then just leave the rod alone until you see the fish bite.....a lot less work than samon fishing.

The first "fish" I caught wore me plum out...You'll see a picture of it in a minute.

Ok, here's my first "fish." A 5 foot long skate. It was like reeling in a piece of plywood from 300ft. I was pleased to discover later that it was a lot easier to reel in the halibut.

FYI: the other guys on the boat with us, including their fearless leader in the blue plaid were pure geniuses on their 1 week of vacation from working the oil fields in North Alaska. The genius being demonstrated here is holding the very angry, flapping skate between your legs with his stinger trying to make contact with your crotch.

Ok, now onto the halibut fishing, and to my "the big one that got away story." It should be noted that Jaclynn and I listened to our tiny female (I think) captain's fishing advice and caught our limit. Our three genius cohorts caught a combined 2 Halibut between the three of them weighing a total of 28lbs...oh, and about 6 Tom Cod which one of them said "that's good eating there. Don't throw it back."

Here's one of Jaclynn's fish. A 42 lb Halibut.

Ok, I know you're not going to believe it, but the following pictures are of me reeling in a roughly ~200 lb Halibut for about half and hour. Got it all the way up to the boat, but it was too big (the length of the back of the boat...probably 5.5 - 6 ft long) to pull in to the back without killing all of us. The captain harpooned it with a bouy that floats 200lbs...well, that just made him mad...he broke my line and went straight down. Spent the next 1.5 hours waiting for him to tire out and surface...but he never did...argh. So, all I have is this picture with a funny look on my face after he swam away.

For comparison take, here's a 4ft Halibut caught by another boat. It weighed in at 174 lbs. Until then, our captain had tried to downplay loosing my fish and estimated it was probably 150lbs. After seeing the one below, she appologized for loosing my fish. "Damn, you're fish was over 200lbs. I'm really sorry we lost it...can't believe it stayed down with a harpoon in it's side attached to a 200lb bouy. Oh well, it was a fun experience.

19 week sonogram

Well, we just had our 19 week sonogram, and the baby checks out great. All the measurements are right on for where he/she should be. The sono tech confirmed major organs are present and look good. So we're counting our blessings that everything is going smoothly so far.

...now I know what all of you want to know...is it a boy or a girl?

...sorry, but we all will have to wait a few more months to find out. :)

Alaska Vacation 2009 - Part 2: Moose Pass

Alaska Vacation 2009 - Part 1 - Blueberry Hills

I know...I know...we're behind with our blog postings, better late than never. Here's a few (well quite a few) pictures along with a summary of our vactation to Alaska last year.

A co-worker and friend purchased a vacation home in Moose Pass, Alaska and invited us up to play tourist, so we just couldn't pass up the offer (Thanks Lorri!). And what a fun time...we've got a lot of stories. We started the trip by heading north from Anchorage to get a view Denali (only out-of-towners call it Mt. McKinley...just in case you were wondering). On the way we spent the night in an out of season cross-country ski lodge in Hatcher Pass.

Here's our cabin in Hatcher Pass. Unfortunately, a rain storm rolled in just as we arrived so rather than hike in the cold and rain we played board games insides the lodge and relaxed.

We soon realized that the ski lodge was surrounded by wild blueberry fields so we spent the afternoon hiking around the area and picking up blueberrys....really good blueberrys.

The Next Day we hiked around an old mine just up the road from the ski lodge. Got a quick peak at Denali and started the drive to Moose Pass.

Jaclynn has an uncanny ability to time her blinks with the snap of a camera...but don't we look like a good couple anyway?

San Diego Padres Baseball Game

While we were in San Diego we decided to watch a baseball game. The San Diego Padres played the Los Angeles Angels. It was cold!! We drank hot chocolate and tried to stay warm!!

The stadium was really nice. It is right in downtown San Diego. Driving by, you might miss it. It looks like any other building!

Of course we brought Flat Stanley! I think he enjoyed his first baseball game. The guy sitting beside us had just finished with a Flat Stanley for his niece! This little guy is famous!!

San Diego Zoo

We couldn't visit San Diego and miss out on the world's best zoo! We spent and entire day exploring the zoo. They have so many intersting animals! They have the biggest collection of animals that are endangered and extinct in the wild than any other zoo I have ever been too. We really had a great time at the zoo.

One of the giant Panda bears. San Diego has the largest collection of giant Panda Bears in the United States. They have four of them. The giant Pandas are endangered. There are only 27 that live outside of China!!

I think the Polar bears were our favorite! They were so cute and cuddly! These cute little fellows weigh about 1500 pounds. Yikes! That is a big bear! Polar bears are a threatened species. San Diego zoo's Polar Bear Plunge is one of the world's largest Polar bear exhibits.

This playful Polar bear kept swimming out of the water, grabbing carrots, then swimming back to the glass and sitting up to eat his carrot! He was so funny!!

After he was full of carrots he grabbed a palm branch and rolled around on it for a long time to dry off

This gorilla kept making us laugh! He would come up to the glass and stare at all the people directly in the eyes. Sometimes he stood in the same spot, staring at the same person for several minutes before moving on to the next victim!

This is the Asiatic elephant, which is also endangered. You can tell this one apart from the African Elephant because it has smaller ears. They just put out enrichment toys for the elephant so he was playing while we were there. The container held carrots, and had only one small opening. The elephant would turn the container around until he could get the carrot out, then he would eat it. It was funny to watch, because he knew that the carrot came out of the little hole!

The koala bears slept most of the time we were there. Did you know that Koala bears sleep 18-20 hours every day?

Overall I think the zoo was our favorite part of the trip! It was huge!! With over 4000 animals, I'm sure we missed a few. We will definitely go back some day!

San Diego

Michael had the opportunity to travel to Sand Diego for a work event, so we went out a few days ahead of time and had a mini vacation. We still had Flat Stanley, so he got to come with us! I can tell you one thing, that little flat man has had alot more fun on his vacation than I ever had!!

Flat Stanley and the Aquarium

My cousin, Hadleigh sent me her Flat Stanley project a couple of weeks ago. She decided to send it to me because I live close to the zoo, and she wanted him to go visit the zoo. For those of you who don't know Flat Stanley, he is a character in a children's book who gets flattened when a bulliten board falls on him. He realizes he can mail himself to his friends in an envelope and see the world. Our assignment was to take Flat Stanley and show him our city. It was a cold, rainy weekend so instead of the zoo we took Flat Stanley to the Dallas Aquarium

Michael made sure to point out all the good stuff to Flat Stanley!

Our Anniversary

On Sunday we had all of my family over the meet the boys. I think they were a hit!! All of the younger cousins really enjoyed carrying the boys around. Michael cooked red beans and rice and made corn and shrimp soup. I made peach cobbler. Everythind was delicious!!

We went to Baton Rouge the weekend before Christmas to celebrate with Michael's family. I had to work on Christmas eve so we came back to Fort Worth for Christmas. We spent a lazy Christmas morning at home. We went up to my mom's in the afternoon and had fun with them.

Christmas Eve

When we were little, we would beg mom "Please, just let us open one present early" . We were relentless, we wouldn't stop until finally on the night of Christmas Eve she would give in and let us open one present. She would carefully select just the present and give it to us all to open early. Somehow, every year she had magically selected new pajamas for us all to wear!! This year I had to work on Christmas Eve. When we got ready to go to bed, there was a gift waiting for me in the bed. I opened it and found pajamas!! Michael remembered that I liked that tradition and bought me pajamas! This is sort of a big deal because he was very adamant on not opening any presents early!!

Last week on Tuesday I took the kitties to the vet to have their surgeries, we also had them front declawed. This week on wednesday night Michael and I met for dinner after work then came home. Michael immediately went to the bathroom to let the kitties out. He came straight back into the kitchen with a look of horror on his face. He said "You're not going to believe this". I said "what". He made me go look for myself. Sweet little Maggie had picked at one of claws until it bled. Their was blood everywhere!! It was on the walls, the cabinet, covering the floor, in the bathtub. It looked like a massacre!! So I went to Petsmart and bought the kitties a Kennel. Now they live there when we are not home, just like dogs. It is 4ft by 3ft so they have plenty of room for their litterbox, food and toys. They actually seem like they like it!!
